Make an entrance – Hallway inspiration | Interior decorating ideas

1st April 2023

A patterned floor with a short banister leading upstairs. Colour blocking painted on the walls to add to the art hanging.

We all know the saying ‘you only get one chance to make a first impression’. Hallways tend to be the first thing guests see when visiting – yet they’re often an afterthought when it comes to decorating. Read our hallway inspiration tips on how you can ‘make an entrance’ with some easy updates to the gateway of your humble abode.

A warm welcome

Is there anything better than a warm welcome? A carefully considered colour scheme can work wonders towards creating a cosy entrance. If you have a dark and cold hallway (perhaps it’s north facing) then opt for colours that have undertones of red, pink or yellow. Light colours such as White Clay and Up Up Away will help to brighten up the space whilst keeping it warm with their yellow undertones.

Alternatively, why not embrace a small hallway with a darker hue such as Muddy Boots? This warm, fawny-tawny brown is perfect for creating a warm welcome, that almost feels like a hug every time you return home.

Surprise statement

Your hallway is a great opportunity to play with your favourite colours and showcase the personalities of your home. Decorating with a bold colour is always a great way of making a style statement. Consider painting accents such as skirting, door frames and inside cabinets in a bright hue – a surprise pop of colour is sure to make guests smile.

If you fancy something a little more adventurous, why not try mixing colour blocking with your favourite colour? Colour blocking is a simple yet effective way to add interest to featureless walls. Here we’ve used Hobgoblin and St John to create this beautiful stripe pattern.

Less is more

Sometimes a lack of colour in a scheme is just as impactful. Selecting a palette of harmonious neutrals in your hallway creates a scheme that oozes style and sophistication.

For the ultimate paired back scheme, try Flutterby our ‘nearly white’ with warm neutrals Tom’s Bakery and Feather Pillow.

Take a seat

We’ve all been there, you visit a friend’s house and awkwardly hop around their hallway trying to remove your footwear. If you’re lucky enough to have a larger hallway, adding a bench is a friendly way to welcome guests that is not only practical but looks stylish too.

Did you know that our Eco Chic range is perfect for upcycling furniture? Upcycling is not only better for your pocket but the planet too. Our eco friendly formula makes upcycling quick and easy meaning you don’t have to spend a fortune on a brand new hallway bench. Check out Facebook marketplace or your local charity shop for a suitable bench project.

Stylish Storage

Simple storage ideas such as coat hooks, shoe racks and storage boxes are not only great ways to keep your hallway tidy but can all be cleverly incorporated as part of your hallway décor.

We just love how @oursomersetnest used Gregory’s Den to create their beautiful built in storage bench that is functional and super stylish!

Make the outside look just as good as in…

The outside of your home is your first chance to make an impression, whilst giving guests a glimpse into what is inside. Making the outside of your home look good can be as simple as giving your windows a spring clean and getting rid of any garden weeds to painting the exterior of your property.
