Painting edges can be one of the most difficult and time consuming parts of decorating your home, and using tape has become the go-to way for homeowners to do it, mistake free. However, if you don’t have any tape to hand or are looking to cut time, there are some clever decorating hacks you can try.
To help you master the art of painting an edge without tape, Jon, our Technical Advisor, has revealed five top tips that may encourage you to ditch the tape altogether.
Invest in high quality brushes
Selecting brushes that are well made and designed for precision and control will make painting neater lines much easier without the need to use tape. Brushes with fine bristles will help you take better control of your brush strokes.
You should also consider choosing angled or sash brushes as these are specifically designed for cutting in and painting edges accurately. Our Cutting in line brush is ideal for cutting in to achieve a perfect edge.
Downsize your brush and be conservative with your paint
If you’re struggling to stay within the lines when painting on the edge, opt for a smaller brush. This will allow for more precise strokes and better control of the brush. Make sure to dip your brush about one third of the bristle length into the paint.
Tap off any excess paint on the rim of your paint pot to avoid any drips or blobs. This will also help to prevent the paint from spreading too far.
Brush away from the edge
Rather than starting to paint directly on the edge, begin slightly away from it and work slowly outwards. As you move towards the edge, you can gradually angle the brush to get closer without going over the line. Another benefit of this technique is that it helps to avoid any visible brush marks or ridges.
Apply the paint in thin layers
Work in thin layers of paint rather than one thick coat. Thinner layers are easier to manage and have a lower risk of smudging or bleeding out across the boundary. Just make sure to leave time for each coat to dry before applying the next.
Keep on top of mistakes
Should you make any mistakes and accidentally paint over the edge, it’s important to have a damp cloth on hand to quickly wipe off the paint before it dries. Reacting quickly will make the touch up process much easier.
