How to create a moodboard

Are you stuck on where to start with your next project? A moodboard is a visual representation of your project’s aesthetic, and it’s an incredible tool to help guide your creative decisions and bring your vision to life. And the best part? It’s super easy to create!

Starting Point

Begin by gathering a few words or images that speak to you. What inspires you? What style do you love? Maybe it’s a beautiful costal retreat or a cosy woodland walk. Whatever it is, write down some keywords like ‘relaxation’ or choose a few inspiring images and stick them on a board. This will be the foundation of your mood board, giving you a clear starting point for your project.

Colour Choices

Now it’s time to get visual with colour! Choose one or two main colours that evoke the feeling you want to create in your space. You can use our gorgeous Claypaint swatches, which are painted in real Claypaint, to get a true sense of the colours you have chosen. Add a few accent colours to complement your main hues, and don’t be afraid to experiment! A colour wheel can be a huge help in finding different combinations.

Key Pieces

Time to add the main event! Gather images of the key pieces that would like in your space, think larger pieces of furniture such as sofas, beds, or even statement pieces of art. Cut them out and stick them on your board, grouping them together to get a sense of how they’ll interact with each other. This is where the magic starts to happen!

Swatches

Next add some texture and depth with swatches of wallpaper, fabric, and flooring. These will give you a better sense of how the materials will look in real life. For example, if you’re designing a bedroom, grab some fabric samples of bed linen or wallpaper scraps and add them to your board.

Accessories and Trinkets

The final step is all about adding those finishing touches! Think candles, glassware, cushions – anything that adds personality to your space. This is where you can really get creative and make your moodboard pop! If items are too big to fit on your moodboard, simply take a picture to get a feel!

And that’s it! With these simple steps, you’ll have a stunning moodboard that will guide you through your project and bring your vision to life. Remember, it’s all about capturing the essence of what you want to achieve – don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with it!
