Debunking home painting myths

24th March 2018

Paint roller in progress.

A lick of paint can transform your home, but many begin the painting process with a number of misconceptions in mind which could ultimately hinder the success of the finished product. With these misapprehensions in mind, you may limit yourself with not only the colours you choose but how those colours are used in your room. Below we look to debunk some of the most coming painting myths.

You need more than two coats of paint

It is true that often paints will require more than simply one coat, however many people will jump straight to three coats without stopping to review whether or not it is really needed, and waste a substantial amount of paint at the same time. Choosing the right paint product is the key to ensuring you can do as few coats as possible, the best paints should have a thick consistency such as Earthborn’s Claypaint, which will require fewer coats than other conventional emulsions.

You need a white ceiling to make the room look bigger

Having a white ceiling will of course add height to a room, however many people limit themselves creatively by simply heading straight for the bright white paints for their ceiling. Keeping your ceiling a slightly lighter colour than walls will provide just as much height as a bright white, so don’t be afraid to go for those greens or blues.

Dark colours shrink a room

The success of using dark paint colours in a room depends entirely on the furniture that you have and the size and number of windows; dark walls and dark furniture alongside very few windows will certainly make a room appear more enclosed. However, if your room has light furniture, or large windows then using a darker, more vibrant colour will add personality and interest to a room.

White paint makes a room look too clinical

We couldn’t disagree more with this particular myth, white walls can add so much to a room when done in the right way. There are countless shades of white that you can choose from that, when used together in a room, will add character to your room.

Eco paints limit the colour you can use

In the past eco-friendly paints were extremely limited in terms of quality and range. However, this is no longer the case. Earthborn Paints have been expertly produced to ensure that using eco-friendly paints is not to the detriment of the finished product. We have an astounding range of 72 shades, with products to suit every situation.
