What goes around comes around… and interior design trends are no exception. A hot trend for 2023 is predicted to be the return of bold, beautiful wall borders. Think period décor with a modern twist as the perfect way to add a bit of fun and character to your home, whether you live in a modern house or an older property.
Wall borders are becoming popular again because they can add interest and detail to a room or area in your home really quickly and at a relatively low cost.
We’re all getting more confident with using colour in our homes and adding a border is a great way to elevate a room. Borders can be layered over wallpaper or painted walls or they can be used to create a feature in simpler rooms. They can even be used to highlight existing features in a room, particularly if you have a period or listed property.
They’re less commitment than wallpapering or painting the whole room but can add a pop of colour and interest to the space.

Traditionally, borders were used to add interest to a room. They would be placed either along the top edge of the wall, halfway down the wall or at picture rail height. Designs varied but it was typical to find borders in pastel colours with a floral motif.
Fast forward to 2023 and borders look a lot different. Gone are the days of being confined to these three areas, now borders are free flowing, wrapping around corners, door frames and windows to accentuate existing features. Breaking away from traditional horizontal lines, borders used vertically can change the feel of a space. Drawing the eye up, vertical borders can be used to create the illusion of higher ceilings in a room.
Some things should be left in the past, like the washed-out, flower-covered adhesive borders of the 1980s. Now wall borders have been reinvented, to be vibrant, bold and beautiful additions to any room. Expect to be spoilt for choice with many styles available, from geometric and organic shapes to abstract and floral. Colours are no longer limited to just pastel hues either.
Wallpaper borders are bolder than ever like the Ernie Wallpaper border from Studio Atkinson, printed using a traditional surface print technique, it really catches the eye.
