How to pick a colour for a south facing room

Choosing a colour can be difficult as there are many factors to consider for example the size of the room and what the room is going to be used for.

But most importantly finding your perfect paint colour depends on what direction your room is facing. Here we will focus on colours for a south face room.

What does it mean to have a south facing room?

If you have a south facing room, lucky you! This tends to be one of the easiest rooms to pick a colour for.

Having a south facing room means that the room tends to be filled with natural, warm toned light throughout the day (in good weather of course) which only gets warmer throughout the day into the evening.

This means that almost any colour is suitable but if you are wanting to delve a little deeper and achieve a particular look or feeling, then were here to help.

Keeping it bright and airy

This will be easy in your south facing room by opting for neutral greys and white colours.

For a bright and airy look consider colours that have a slightly blue/ grey undertone to help balance out the yellow/warm light that the room is exposed to.

White Clay is one of our most popular colours with warmer undertones which would be perfect to create a calming space. Eyebright is a light grey with cool undertones of violet which would neutralise warm light in the room for a relaxing feel.

Finally, Tuffet is a cool pastel grey which in contrast to the warm light will appear brighter, cancelling out yellow tones for a fresh and tranquil feel.

Make a statement with greens and blues

Very on trend at the moment and for good reason. Green colours offer not only a sophisticated look but have a connection to nature with the idea of bringing the outdoors in.

Blue is still proving to be very popular evoking a sense of calmness.

Green and blue are perfect for south facing rooms as the warm/ yellow light intensity is balanced on the cooler green/blue hues. Depending on how bold you would like to be we have picked out some of our favorites.

If your scared of being bold but are still wanting some colour Sunday Stroll is perfect for a nod to the green trend but without being too dramatic.

Hobby Wood is a much deeper forest green and perfect for those looking to make a statement room.

For a dramatic deep blue colour look no further than Balloon Ride from our Treat your Senses Collection, a dark rich blue which coupled with the warm light from a south facing room would create the perfect cosy space.

For a blue that’s more versatile consider our mid toned blue Polka Dot, which would be ideal in those south facing sociable rooms.

Going with the glow

You may not want to counteract the warm yellow tones that a south facing room brings and in fact embrace them. For this you can stick with any warmer toned colours which will only be enhanced throughout the day. Bright colours will appear vivid and intense whilst softer warm colours like creams or pale yellows will have a soft glow especially towards late afternoon.

For a pop of colour why not try a splash of Daisy Chain, a vibrant yellow guaranteed to make you smile. You should consider using this colour on a feature wall or on accents such as doors or furniture. For a more subtle look at our colours Jemima, Peach Baby and Ballet Shoe all of which have warm undertones and would be perfect to enhance that warm glow.
