How to upcycle with Earthborn furniture paint

1st March 2023

Upcycle with Eco Chic furniture paint

Updating furniture is not only a simple way to inject colour and personality into a room, but it’s cost effective too. Painting furniture is simple and quick using our range of eco friendly upcycle products. We’ve put together some of the easiest ways you can paint furniture at home using Earthborn furniture paint.

What’s the best paint for painting furniture?

We have two paint finishes that are perfect for painting furniture:

Our first product is Eco Chic,  it is luxuriously thick and creamy, making it a dream to use for upcycling projects.

Eco Chic is super versatile: you can dilute it with water, layer it and sand back areas, or as a contemporary, flat finish. With a high clay content, it covers exceptionally well, so a little goes a long way.

Alternatively, our Eggshell No.17 finish is ideal for all interior woodwork including skirting boards, doors and door frames, along with any piece of furniture. Eggshell No.17 is a smooth, durable and scuff resistant furniture paint with a silky soft sheen finish.

How do I apply Earthborn furniture paints?

It’s easy! We recommend lightly sanding your furniture first to provide a key and help the paint stick.

Eco Chic paint can be applied directly, but due to its beautifully thick texture we find it is easier to dilute the first coat, with around 1 part water to 9 parts paint. Follow this with another full coat of paint; you can also use Furniture Wax for added durability.

When using Eggshell No.17, simply prime using our Multi Purpose Primer. Follow this with 2-3 coats of paint. Both products are quick drying so your project can be ready in no time. And due to its hardwearing soft sheen, Eggshell No.17 doesn’t require finishing with any other product.

Step 1 – Preparation

Give your piece of wood furniture a quick clean removing any dust, oils and grease. Of course, we recommend a natural cleaning product such as diluted White Vinegar solution to get the job done quickly. Don’t have a piece of furniture yet? Don’t worry – Social media platforms and apps such as Marketplace are great ways to find bargain pieces to upcycle.

Step 2 – Apply

Choose your colour: Our Furniture Paint is available in 72 stunning shades. Our Eco Chic formula doesn’t require any primers and perfect coverage can be achieved in one coat. Just apply Eco Chic directly onto your wooden furniture using a brush or a roller… yes, it’s really that simple! If you’re using Eggshell No. 17, remember to apply a coat of Multi Purpose Primer first.

Step 3 – Make it unique (optional)

We love the different looks that can be achieved using Earthborn Products. Earthborn Pigments aren’t just for mixing paint colours – they are highly versatile and great for adding special effects. Available in 47 shades, including glittery Mica Gold and Mica Silver – Earthborn Pigments are perfect for adding colour washes, dragging, and stencilling.

Step 4 – Protect

Earthborn Furniture Wax is a clear buttery soft and water-resistant wax that provides a protective satin finish to interior wood surfaces. Our soft wax is easy to work with, has a very low odour, and can be applied with a brush or cloth. After painting with Earthborn Eco Chic furniture paint, simply apply a coat of Furniture Wax. Allow to dry, then buff to a soft sheen.

For a matt finish, you only need to buff very lightly; or buff a little more for extra shine and protection. Our Furniture Wax looks better with age, but any scratches or scrapes can be re-waxed and re-buffed easily. It’s perfect for all types of interior furniture and takes around 10 days to fully harden and cure. Waxed surfaces will remain breathable, protected and maintained, repelling water, dust and grease.

If you’ve chosen to paint with Eggshell No. 17, there’s no need to add an extra layer of protection as the paint will do that itself.
