If there’s one area of the home that truly benefits from a fresh coat of paint it’s interior woodwork.
All those skirting boards, architraves, banisters, doors and window frames are usually subjected to lots of wear and tear – often looking scuffed, bashed and generally dirty or discoloured after a while.
Think of these areas as the finishing touches of your decor; a lick of paint here can smarten up your room and bring it back to life.
So what type of paint is best?
Traditionally, oil based gloss paints were used for interior woodwork, and still are by some. Whilst these types of paints have their benefits (such as a hardwearing finish), they are often full of nasty solvents, are very smelly, typically yellow over time and can be difficult to apply.
As a result, water based gloss and eggshell paints (which allow brushes to be washed in water instead of white spirit) have become more common in home decorating.
Our Eggshell No.17 has a water based formula that dries quickly to a silk sheen. A durable, washable and scuff resistant finish ideal for interior woodwork.
Its clever formulation contains no oils or hidden nasties, and is virtually VOC free, allowing you to enjoy your room almost immediately after painting with no lingering smells.
Can I use emulsion on woodwork too?
It’s becoming increasingly popular to use the same paint on wood trims and walls. Called ‘colour drenching’ this method helps everything blend together smoothly and gives your space a striking cohesive look.
Our Claypaint looks great on wood surfaces drying to a sophisticated ultra flat matt finish. Fancy taking colour drenching to the next level? Why not try using our Eco Chic furniture paint on your wooden furniture as well as fabric upholstery.
When decorating keep in mind the amount of traffic an area is likely to receive – because of the ultra flat matt finish of both Claypaint and Eco Chic, surfaces are less durable and easily marked. To add durability consider protecting surfaces with either Wall Glaze or Furniture Wax depending on your project.
For high traffic areas like skirting boards or door frames, we’d always suggest using our durable Eggshell No.17, which is available in over 70 shades.
How to apply Earthborn Eggshell
As well as being durable and wipeable, one of the best features of our Eggshell No.17 is that dries super quick to a silk sheen. If painting onto previously coated woodwork that has been painted with oil based paints or varnishes, be sure to sand the surfaces well to a matt finish before priming with our Multi Purpose Primer.
If you’re painting onto new bare or untreated wood, the surfaces should be prepared with our Multi Purpose Primer and lightly sanded prior to first coat. For best results do two full coats of Eggshell No.17. Sanding lightly in between fully dried coats for an extra smooth finish.
Eggshell No.17 can be used on any interior wood surface – from door frames and shelving to bigger projects like kitchen cupboards.
